What to expect

Before your first session

A plain walk-through of the initial consultation, so the first fifty minutes hold no surprises.

  1. Close on one thought mid committee meeting, before breakfast is even finished

    01

    Before you arrive

A short online intake form before you arrive: name, contact details and what you'd like to talk about

  2. The committee crowds a doorway while one client already sits calmly with his psychologist

    02

    When you arrive

Arrive five minutes early to a quiet waiting area with two chairs, not an open room

  3. Alison Marsh and a client seated face to face, three stones set on the table between them

    03

    The fifty minutes

Fifty minutes face to face or by video, with no notes taken in front of you

  4. The same client, settled, in afternoon window light

    04

    Before you leave

A plan and, if you want one, a next appointment agreed together at the end

What to bring

Two things, if you have them

  • A Mental Health Treatment Plan and GP referral letter, if you have one. It isn't required to book, but it's what makes a Medicare rebate available.
  • Your Medicare card, if you'd like the rebate claimed on the spot at reception.

Nothing else is needed. There is no assessment battery to complete beforehand.

If you're joining by telehealth

The same steps, from wherever you are

The four stages above run exactly the same way over video. A private booking link is emailed ahead of time; log in about five minutes early to check your camera and microphone are working, so the session itself isn't spent troubleshooting.

A quiet, private space

Find somewhere you won't be interrupted for the full fifty minutes, with headphones if that helps you feel less overheard. Everything else about the session, the conversation, the plan at the end, runs the same as an in-person visit.

Common questions

About the initial consultation specifically

  • Do I need a referral to book?

No, you can book directly. A Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral from your GP is what makes you eligible for a Medicare rebate, so it's worth getting one first if you can, but it isn't required to book an initial consultation.

  • What should I bring?

Your Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral letter if you have one, and your Medicare card if you'd like to claim the rebate on the spot. Nothing else is needed.
